My Favorite Travel Bloggers

Upon my return from a year in Seville and jetting off again to teach in Madrid, I spent an obscene amount of hours glued to the computer, reading about other young 20-somethings dropping everything to go work abroad. The life of these travel bloggers seemed so adventurous and interesting and all of their stories had their own way of convincing me that going abroad again was a wise decision.

Fast forward four years later and I’m still a dedicated reader to a now more condensed list of writers and digital nomads. Many of these travel enthusiasts have made world travel their priority and even their career. This group of men and women continue to inspire me and maybe they will inspire you as well!

1. Meet Liz.

I first read Liz Carlson’s blog, Young Adventuress, when I was doing research about teaching in Spain. Liz spent three years in Spain including Logroño and Códoba with the North American Language and Culture Assistants program and now resides in New Zealand when she isn’t traveling the world. Her writing is funny, sarcastic, and honest. She is a no-nonsense girl with a go-getter attitude! If I ever met her on the road, I’d probably ask for an autograph, no shame. Check out her blog for travel and blogging tips, funny anecdotes, a TED Talk, moving abroad, photography tips, and MUCH more!

2. Meet Cat.

Like a number of bloggers on this list, Cat Gaa also began her blog and abroad adventures through NALCA (North American Language and Culture Assistants), teaching English in Seville. Cat is my go-to expert for all things Spain. I had the opportunity to meet her myself when I was studying in Seville! Cat lives in Spain full-time with a Spanish husband and now, baby boy! Her blog, Sunshine and Siestas is a bible for anyone thinking of teaching in Spain. She also co-founded COMO Consulting which tells you how to do anything from renting an apartment to getting a pareja de hecho in Spain.

4. Meet Matt.

I view Matt Kepnes as the next Rick Steves. He has turned a passion for travel into a highly successful business, all beginning with a life-changing trip to Costa Rica. In addition to writing his blog, Nomadic Matt, Matt is the York Times best-selling author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day and continues to help thousands of travelers see the world without breaking the bank. Check out his blog for travel guides, guest bloggers, a travel book club, blogging/photography/travel writing courses and so much more!

5. Meet Jessica.

Jessica Wray is the author of the beautifully designed blog, Curiosity Travels. I discovered her on my quest to find teach abroad information and discovered she taught not only in South Korea, but Madrid as well through the BEDA program. Jessica was kind enough to help me apply to BEDA and answer some of my burning questions. No longer an English teacher, she is now a freelance writer, blogger, and seasonal tour leader with AmeriCan Adventures. I guarantee you will enjoy reading about her travels and admiring her wonderful photos!

6. Meet Kirstie.

Like myself, Kirstie Jeffries studied for one year and taught for two more in Spain through NALCA. She didn’t stop there, however! Kirstie then went on to obtain a visa and work in Australia for two and a half years before making the leap to a full time freelancer, blogger, and traveler. Her blog, Venga, Vale, Vamos is full of travel advice, moving and working abroad, interviews (read her interview with me here!), and backpacking. Kirstie is a great resource and fellow Spain lover. Don’t hesitate to reach out!

The blogs of these eight world travelers have been living in the “blogs” tab of my Chrome bar for years now. Blogging is a relatively new form of storytelling and platform to share advice and experiences. The eight people I’ve listed don’t even scratch the surface of the fascinating travelers out there who are trying to find their own paths. If you’re new to the world of travel blogging, I recommend this list as a jumping off point! Be ready for your sense of wanderlust to grow. 🙂
